چکیده

In this paper, the performance of an ultra-fast all-optical symmetric Mach Zehnder (SMZ) interferometer employed as a demultiplexer and/or a switch in an OTDM network is investigated by means of controlling the power of the control pulses. Employing control signals with optimum unequal powers results in reduced residual crosstalk, thus leading to improved bit error rate (BER) performance and reduced the received power penalty as low as 1 dB at 160 Gb/s. Investigation also show that using the optimum unequal-power control pulse scheme the switching extinction ratio is improved by > 10 dB compared to the conventional equal-power control pulse scheme.

Investigation of Header Extraction based on the Symmetric Mach- Zehnder Switch and Pulse Position Modulation for All-optical Packet- Switched Networks

In packet switched optical network, packet header extraction and processing in alloptical domain is a challenging task. In this paper we propose a new all-optical header extraction scheme based on the versatile all-optical ultrafast symmetric Mach-Zehnder (SMZ) switch and pulse position modulation (PPM) for 80 Gb/s data rate. In SMZ switches, the residual power residing outside the switching wi...

Noise and Crosstalk Analysis of SMZ Switches

Ultra-high speed OTDM networks require stable and compact all optical switches for demultiplexing and routing. In this paper we investigate the noise and crosstalk characteristics of all optical symmetric Mach-Zehnder (SMZ) switch using a numerical model. Two effects, the relative intensity noise (RIN) and channel crosstalk (CXT) that degrade the performance of the switch are investigated. Nume...

Simulation of an All-Optical 1 × 2 SMZ Switch with a High Contrast Ratio

An all-optical 1×2 high contrast ratio (CR) switch based on the symmetric Mach-Zehnder (SMZ) interferometers is presented. Simulation results show a remarkable improvement of the inter-output CR (~25 dB) between the two outputs compared with an existing SMZ switch. It is shown that the proposed switch offers high values of inter-output CR (> 32dB) over a wide range of input powers using appropr...

Crosstalk Investigation of an All-Optical Serial-to- Parallel Converter Based on the SMZ

In this paper an all-optical serial-to-parallel converter (SPC) based on the symmetric Mach-Zehnder (SMZ) interferometers operating at 80 Gb/s is presented. The proposed SPC is simulated and in particular its crosstalk (CXT) characteristics is investigated for a range of different system parameters such as signal and control pulse powers, delay time between the control pulses, and the main phys...

Crosstalk suppression in an all-optical symmetric Mach-Zehnder (SMZ) switch by using control pulses with unequal powers

Suppression of residual crosstalk is desired in switching a data channel from a multiple-channel frame in optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) network. Using the symmetric MachZehnder (SMZ) switch, it is a possible to obtain the desired data channel with relatively low residual crosstalk induced by the adjacent channels. In this paper we propose a simple and effective method to further sup...
